I visited here in '01 on a trip that took us from BKK to Damnoern Saduak for the floating market then down a canal by longtail to its end where we boarded a bus for Samut Sakhon then trained it back to BKK. The market is nice and being a commercial fisherman I always have to check out the local wares and I was not dissapointed, I only wish that I had a place to cook so I could have taken some back. The next best thing was to eat there which was great and very reasonable. As you said, not many farangs on this trip, after the floating market we were the only ones in sight, which is a good thing. Keep up the good work. - JP

I've made the trip to Samut Sakhon/Mahachai by train a couple of times. There's a nice seafood restaurant near the pier. In fact, I think it's the building on the left of the photo. The restaurant upstairs has the best view of the canal and river and there's usually a nice breeze. Prices are reasonable, food tastes good and service is fine.

Am I right in assuming you get a boat on the pier if you want to take the train from Mahachai to Samut Songkram? - David

Yes that is correct. You need to cross the river at that point to catch the train to Samut Songkhram. - Richard Barrow

Last year friends and I rented a boat on the canal and the driver took us a few stops, one in particular I would like to return to this month. It was a pier that had low tables set up all along it where people were serving crab and all kinds of fish to eat. On land, food and market type items were being sold. Does anyone know what that place is called so I can request to go there again? - Karen
